Stefan – thanks. Very exciting time. I’ll be relieved once we’ve got our feet on the ground out there.
All the best Angus. We will keep in touch.
Raj from Canada
Thanks Raj. Hope to host you and your family on an exotic tropical holiday…next time you’re looking to escape the Canadian winter perhaps!?
Not long to go now!!!
Thoughts are with you all at this exciting time!!!
Robert from Melbourne.
Merry Christmas to you Robert. We made our last trip to the container today, so it’s a very echo-ey house now. We leave this country very early Wednesday morning. The kids and Emma send you their very best wishes.
Hi I have similar plans for Samal & would really like to meet with you when I arrive much later in 2011. I have finally decided to escape Canadian Winters, haha & will be wanting to stay on the island for awhile. Please keep me on your contacts list, thanks Glen
Hi Glen, let me know when you have firm travel plans. I’ll be pleased to meet up and give you the benefit of my experience. I met up with a bunch of expats yesterday who meet each Sunday in Penaplata. Some very interesting tales from guys who have been around the island for nearly 20 years.
Nice to see all your happy life over there. You may note that those “old” bvs got kids one by one, any plan to form a big clan over there?
Ah anyway, happy birthday & fruitful life with you & yours.
BTW, are you on fb as bvs regularly posted on fb to share updates & pics.

I was hoping to provide enough bahay kubos for you all to come over and join the commune! Thank you for the birthday wishes – I still have the Nike bag you gave me for a much younger birthday, and remember you and your family each time I use it…seriously! I’m not on FB, but Emma is email with the group name. Nice hearing from you – hope to see some of you down here for some very good diving off Samal Island.
Wow! I was googling bahay kubo design of Mindanao and end up reading your blogs. So inspiring! i can’t wait to get home in Surigao and build my own little bahay kubo too.
Tune back in in about a week’s time for photos of our completed bahay kubo. We’ve just moved in while the last fittings are going on around us. I’m really proud of it.
Congratulations Angus and all Emma’s family who helped you to build your beautiful house. You must feel a real sense of achievement. Enjoy it in good health.
Love Mum XX
They all want to know when you’ll be making the royal visit to cut the ribbon? We’re still applying the finishing touches, but it’s a very nice feeling.
Hi Angus,
Long time no see. Great to be in touch with Emma, and to read your amazing blog. Sounds like a real adventure you’re having over there! We’d love to visit when we are over in the Philippines. Currently working in Brussels at the European School. One more year of my contract to go, then we might move back to Asia. Best, Chris & Rowena.
Great to hear from the Herrings again! Please do visit when you’re next over. My very best to Rowena and the kids. I’m currently part-timing in two EFL establishments, so there are opportunities here.
I need info po on bahay kubo or tropical asian cottage construction, I believe may add po kayo about this, baka po pde kayong mgpdala ng infos, thanks
Hi Cecile, I’ll send you a direct email. Thank you!
Hi please send me informations about the bahay kubo. I want my family to have one of our own.. Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks!!
Hi Merry, thanks for your contact. If you are in the Davao area we would be pleased to meet and discuss your requirements. I can’t offer a price, because each kubo is individual and built to the specfication of the customer, so the price varies according to size and materials. Hope to hear from you soon.
Hi, we really like your bahay kubo design and we would love to have the same when we move to the Philippines to retire.
May I ask who built the house for you.
Ron & Zen Nolan
We designed the house ourselves and it was built by my wife’s brothers. They recently completed another more orthodox house of concrete, but incorporating some of the features from ours – such as a higher than normal (PH) roof to allow a usable loft space. They have already started work on our next project, a recreation area cum open-sided eating area with…a usable loft space. I like to make use of loft spaces!
Angus,
I am so proud of what you have in Samal. You have a beautiful place. I love all the different animals in your place. How I wish to have what you have someday. I can’t wait. Are you still commuting to Davao City everyday? I do hope you’ll continue to have a good time in Samal. I enjoy reading your post.
Thank you for your kind comments, Dine. I hope to write a few more articles this year than last to encourage more people to visit this beautiful island
I will make sure I will visit your restaurant and your resort next time we visit the island. I want you to know you are have inspired a lot of people with your post. Thank you.
The photos are lovely and brought back good memories. The pineappl plants have grown really well.
Our first pineapple fruit is growing – hopefully the other 100 plants will decide to follow soon!
Angus,
Do you have anything about working and living in Samal? I think this will be a very interesting topic.
Regards,
Dine
I could, but it wouldn’t be very uplifting or positive if I was being honest. It would certainly be interesting!
